The Triumphs of Oriana
last update: 16 Dec 2010

Published in 1601 by Thomas Morley, "The Triumphs of Oriana" consists of 30 pieces written by 25 composers and is acknowledged by most as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth I of England (b. 1533, c. 1558, d. 1603).

The name 'Oriana' itself seems to be derived from the Latin - "oriens: rising, the rising sun / east / morning" and could be a word play originating in "Gloriana", a epithet bestowed upon Elizabeth after the eternally youthful Faerie Queene, Gloriana, of Edmund Spenser's poem "The Faerie Queen" (pub. 1590-1596) which apparently was modeled after Elizabeth herself. (Whee, there's a merrie-go-round!).
